Robert
Brownjohn Retrospective at the Design Museum
Following
the huge success of the Saul Bass on Film exhibition, the curators
at the Design Museum soon will herald the work of design master
Robert Brownjohn (1925-1970) in the first major retrospective
of his work. The wit and sexiness of much of Brownjohn's work,
and especially his film titles for From Russia with Love (1963)
and Goldfinger (1964) are not to be missed. To coincide with
this retrospective, the book 'Robert Brownjohn: Sex and Typography'
will be published by Laurence King Publishing (Princeton Architectural
Press in USA and Canada). Designed by Quentin Newark and written
by Emily King, this book promises to be a must-have for American
design and film title afficionados.

In conjunction with SFMOMA's exhibition Belles Lettres: The Art of Typography,

a number of films also rely upon ingenious application of the letter form. David
Peters presents a selection of extraordinary typographic sequences such as those
from Barbarella (Arcady, 1967) and Seven (Kyle Cooper, 1996). Presented at the
Phyllis Wattis Theater, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

TCM PRESENTS A SAUL BASS RETROSPECTIVE
June 2004
TCM showcases films with opening title sequences by legendary graphic
designer Saul Bass, who is widely credited with creating many, if not
most, of the masterpieces of classic modern movie title design. DESIGN
FILMS organizers Ken Coupland and David Peters consulted and provided
research on the series along with future programming that is projected
to include further explorations of the medium.
Airing on consecutive Wednesdays throughout the month of June, "Giving
Credit: The Look of Saul Bass" features five evenings of programming
and some 18 feature films for which Bass designed opening and closing
title sequences and films on which he participated as a design
consultant, along with the sole dramatic feature he directed.
